White Fillings Q & A

What are White Fillings?

White fillings or tooth-colored fillings are fillings made of durable composite resins that can be custom-tinted to match the color of the surrounding tooth material, making restorations virtually invisible. White fillings are increasingly popular among patients who want to achieve state-of-the-art restorations following tooth decay or other damage without detracting from the appearance of the tooth or their smile.

Are White Fillings Better Than Traditional Metal Amalgam Fillings?

White fillings don’t contain mercury, which is a primary component of metal amalgam fillings. They’re also very durable and longer-lasting than softer metals like gold. Plus, the composite material of a tooth-colored filling is designed to achieve a superior bond with the natural tooth surface, making it much more difficult for decay-causing bacteria to “seep in” around the edges of the restoration. And of course, because they blend with the surrounding tooth, they’re simply more aesthetically pleasing than metal amalgam fillings that can turn dark and become more noticeable over time.

How is a Tooth-Colored Filling Applied?

Before application of the resin, the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is carefully removed and the treatment area is cleaned to remove all debris. The filling material is more liquid than metal amalgam filling materials, enabling it to be “flowed” onto the tooth, filling the cavity in layers. Once the filling is in place and shaped, it may be hardened or cured with a special light. Finally, the filling is buffed for a final result that looks natural and feels comfortable.

Do White Fillings Require Any Special Care?

No, white fillings are designed to be extremely durable, and they can be cared for just like a natural tooth with regular brushing and flossing and routine dental checkups.

Does Insurance Cover the Cost of White Fillings?

Many plans provide at least partial coverage for the cost of the filling procedure, but any additional costs for the resin material may need to be paid for out of pocket. Our office can help determine the coverage provided by a specific policy as well as recommend simple financing options that can make the cost of care more affordable.
