Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What is Emergency Dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is the area of dentistry that focuses on treating urgent needs like tooth loss, tooth fracture, chipped teeth, broken or lost fillings, broken crowns or other damaged restorations, cuts and lacerations, swollen or painful gums, toothaches, and other issues that cause pain or interfere with normal tooth and mouth function.

What Should I Do If a Tooth Gets Knocked Out?

If a healthy adult tooth is knocked out, it may be able to be replanted, avoiding the need for a denture, bridge or implant. Because the tooth root can only survive for a short time outside the mouth, it’s essential to call the office immediately if a tooth is knocked out. Gently rinse the tooth to remove any dirt or debris. Place the tooth back in the socket if possible and hold it in place by biting firmly but gently on a piece of gauze or clean cloth. If the tooth cannot be placed in the socket, it may be placed between the cheek and gum or in a cup of water or milk. When handling the tooth, do not touch the root which can become damaged very easily, preventing replanting - seek care immediately.

Is it OK to Treat a Toothache with Home Remedies?

While it’s generally OK to take a pain reliever, use a cold compress or rinse the mouth with salt water to help reduce inflammation until you can see the dentist, it’s not a good idea to use home remedies or drugstore products to treat a toothache or to delay professional care. A toothache is a sign of a problem with the tooth or the tissues surrounding it. Without prompt professional care, the condition can develop into a very serious medical issue like a deep infection or tooth loss. When a toothache occurs, call the office immediately to schedule an appointment, and keep the appointment even if the pain goes away before the office visit.

What Should I Do if I Have a Dental Emergency?

When any dental emergency occurs, it’s important to call the office right away to speak with someone who can assess your situation and schedule an appointment. If you are ever faced with a dental emergency, do not hesitate to call Dr. Sahli at Sunrise Dental to see how he can help.
